Have you been facebooked?

Margurette Awad / Reporter

Facebook…Facebook…FACEBOOK…Facebook…FACEBOOK… Facebook! It is literally everywhere and it has taken the Elon community by storm. Hotter than popped collars and pink Polos, Elon’s trend-setting students have given life to the social network created by Mark Zukerberg, an undergraduate at Harvard.

Started in February 2004 as a simple project, thefacebook.com has soared to new heights as it now enrolls more than 200 universities across the nation.

Starting at Harvard, Facebook has expanded to universities such as Yale, Brown, Pepperdine and now Elon.

Recently opened to our campus, the Facebook has set in place a new trend with unknown potential. With capabilities of messaging such as groups, posts and poking, the Facebook is now on the tip of everyone’s tongue and continues to spread faster than the flu during cold season.

Completely independent of Elon’s administration, the Facebook is a voluntary site that creates a network among schools and their students. Elon University has not released any information regarding individual students; Facebook is essentially a student-run site where students voluntarily link themselves to other students via courses, friends, interests, groups and even other universities that use the online network.

It is one of the easiest ways to learn about others, but with a school as small as Elon, it is my prediction that the entire university will soon be linked.

Some of the most widely used features include an advanced high school and global search. Not only can you search Elon’s community for specific individuals, but you can also track down old high school friends and acquaintances. Find out where those friends are who you lost contact with and create a line of communication. It’s certainly easier than waiting for a class reunion!

Even though Facebook is currently spoken of in a positive light, be wary of placing extremely personal information on the web (i.e. cell phone number, home address). It is never a wise idea to post complete contact information.

Even though Elon students are the only ones who can gain complete access within this university network, no site is fool-proof. Make conscious decisions about the information you include, and if needed, set the privacy options provided by the creators.

Here’s the web address: http://www.thefacebook.com Poke your friends. Create your own social network. Get to know that boy or girl right down the hall. So what are you waiting for? Have you been Facebooked?
