Judd Asbill's Culinary

Judd Asbill / Food Critic

The other night a friend and I went to the Bonefish Grill for dinner. The food was amazing, but the service left more to be desired. Maybe this was because our waitress thought that since we were college students we wouldn’t tip well.

By the time I arrived at the restaurant it was starting to get busy. We had to wait about 40 minutes before we were seated. Though we were seated right next to the kitchen, the ambiance of the restaurant was quite pleasant.

We were served bread upon arrival to our seats. This bread, which was somewhat toasted, was among the best bread I have ever had at a restaurant. We each were also served a salad. One was a house salad and the other a Caesar salad. They both were rather tasty. For dinner we ordered a Chilean sea bass and two lobster tails.

The sea bass was served with potatoes au gratin. The two lobster tails were served in a creamy, butter sauce. Along with the lobster I was served mixed vegetables. There was also a small bowl of a sauce that looked and tasted like melted butter, but its true contents remained unidentifiable.

My friend had a white Russian before dinner and, as recommended by our waitress, a sweet white wine that complemented the fish. After dinner, my friend ordered a Crème Brule to go because our dinners were filling.

The food was spectacular. However, the service was not up to the standard that I would associate with a restaurant of this caliber.

For example, there were stretches of time when our waitress was not attentive to us and we had to ask another waiter or waitress to help us out. Also, our order wasn’t taken until quite some time after we were seated. I don’t know if this was because our waitress had a busy night or if she was just having a bad night. However, I didn’t notice tables turning around too quickly in order to make room for more patrons.

I give the experience three and a half stars out of five. The rating is based predominately on the food that was served rather than the quality of service. If you don’t mind waiting a little to be served and you want quality food, then this restaurant is a good place to go. However, if you are like me, and the quality of service you receive outweighs the quality of the food that is offered, then I would recommend trying some other restaurant that offers better service.
