Capitol Steps will break it down Washington style Tuesday
Jessica Patchett / Editor in Chief
A group of White House staffers put together some skits and
songs about life on the ‘Hill’ in 1981 and today
they are taking their satire nationwide. Capitol Steps, a
bipartisan organization of more than 40 White House staffers
from a range of musical backgrounds, has been recognized by
National Public Radio numerous times and has a tour schedule
booked through spring 2005.
The Capitol Steps are received so widely due in part to their
commitment to “get everybody.”
Capitol Steps will give two performances at Elon Tues. Sept.
21 at McCrary Theatre at 6:30 and 8:00 p.m. Each show, an
ensemble of about five people will perform more than 30 songs
poking fun at everyone from George Bush to John Kerry, and
Martha Stewart to pop stars.
Elaina Newport, producer of Capitol Steps, a performer and a
founding member, said the group adds a new song about once a
week to keep up with what goes on in the news.
One of Capitol Steps most recent songs include a remake of
the popular song “I like big butts.” The group
created new words to poke fun at Bush. The song is retitled,
“I like big cuts and I can not lie.”
