The Resident Student Association and the Student Union Board have teamed up to take interested students to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville and the Broadway musical “Little Shop of Horrors” playing in Raleigh’s Memorial Auditorium.

The Biltmore Estate trip is on Saturday. Tickets cost $15. “If students are interested in the trip, they should sign up in Moseley 213 very soon because spots fill up fast,” Dwayne Waite, publicity chair of RSA said.

Those going to the Biltmore Estate will leave Boney Fountain at 8 a.m and return around 8 p.m. While at the estates students can take a guided tour in the morning and then wander about the rest of the afternoon in the gardens and the house. There are also shops, cafes and a river area to explore. Later on in the evening students can look forward to touring the estate’s winery.

At a brainstorming session at the beginning of the year, RSA chose to go to “Little Shop of Horrors” based on its timing and reviews. According to Stacey Bradbury, RSA programming chair, the show had great reviews from everyone who saw it and its timing for a trip was perfect. The vans for “Little Shop of Horrors” will leave March 4. Tickets for this event are $20 and there are still about 30 spots still available.

The success of trips last year helped to set the agenda for trips this year. The Biltmore Estate tour and Broadway shows were the most popular last year and RSA wanted to continue going to popular places.

“Since RSA is a new organization, we wanted to start traditions that students will enjoy,” Bradbury said.

RSA decided to team up with SUB for these trips for several reasons. First, because the organization is only two and a half years old, it has a small budget. Through collaborations with SUB, RSA can keep ticket prices for events down. Prices for tickets have been cut by at least $20 for “Little Shop of Horrors.” RSA and SUB also work together to increase publicity for the trips. “These trips are a way for residents to get out and do things, to meet new friends, see the local cities and hang out,” Bradbury said.

Other events that RSA is sponsoring on campus include "Wannabe," a lip-syncing contest. Applications are due March 1 to Moseley 213. Last year, over 300 people attended the event in McKinnon Hall to compete for prizes. This year’s first place prize is $250. The second place prize is $150 and the third place prize is $50.

“We strive to give students what they want and make them happy,” Waite said.
