Surveillance and hidden cameras haunt students

New technology makes it easy to record people and get away with it

Ashley Busch / Reporter

Even with the beautiful weather Elon has experienced the past couple of days, the mountains of homework and stress have many students wishing that spring break hadn’t ended and that they could go back to the parties or relaxing that the time off provided. However, for some, spring break is being taken advantage of during moments of spontaneity and having some of their worst nightmares come true.

In a growing trend among many college students, spring breakers are going out and getting more than what they bargained for while vacationing. They are being video recorded and eventually having their antics put on the Internet for the world’s viewing and commercial sale.

There are many places where you can access online different spring break hidden cameras in many hot spots such as Cancun, Panama City and even as close as Myrtle Beach. Many people will carry around a video camera to various clubs and beaches to film the contests or regular spring break antics of participants and people. They’ll then take the footage and put it online and charge a fee, or sometimes even make it available for free, and have the photos and video for millions to view instantly. The photos and videos from one night of fun can haunt a person for the rest of their life.

And it doesn’t stop at spring break.

Even Elon has experienced the repercussions of unwanted surveillance and peeping in the past couple of months. Hidden camera equipment and materials can be found online for as little as $40 with easy assembly and how-to directions.

The growing trend of hidden surveillance or peeping is disturbing in the fact that it keeps growing and people are finding more and more ways to get what they need to make online peeping and sharing happen. It goes beyond things such as vacations and even invades everyday life.

On a recent how-to-do-it-yourself episode on the TV Tech channel, there were complete instructions as to how to cut a hole in the floor and place a camera in a Dance Dance Revolution arcade game in order to sneak a peek at women who play the game in skirts or dresses.

With the age of digital technology, it seems that anything is possible. Cameras can be placed in just about everything. So what do we do to prevent these sorts of things? Both men and women alike need to remain aware of their surroundings and their situation. Be mindful of suspicious people and don’t do anything you might come to regret later. What happens during spring break in today’s technologically advanced world may not stay on spring break.
