Men's soccer getting a spring workout
Nathan Rode / Sports Editor
Being in the offseason does not mean athletes go into
hibernation. The men's soccer team, under direction of
new coach Darren Powell, has seen some action this spring.
Powell, in his first semester as head coach, is already
working toward an improved season.
On April 6 the Phoenix defeated Catawba 3-0 and then downed
Duke 1-0 on April 9. Duke still has all of its players from
the team that went to the Final Four in November. Duke lost
to University of California-Santa Barbara, the eventual
champions, in the semi-finals. Gabe Loducca snagged the
rebound from a Blake Wertz shot and sent it to the back of
the net. The goal came late in the game and the Phoenix was
able to hold off any ensuing Blue Devil threat.
Elon will continue to compete in friendly matches with
various schools and club teams.
