Scary Movies

Read a synopsis of America's favorite Halloween movies before snuggling up in your dorm room to watch the tricky, classy and thrillers

Lisa Burzotta / Reporter

Halloween is a night of dressing up and partying. Unfortunately, this year Halloween is on a Monday. Monday night you could be out partying and having a great time but of course, you have an 8 a.m. on Tuesday. You can't afford to miss another class because you've already slept through it three times.

Since you can't go out, grab some of your fellow classmates, a bowl of popcorn and the remote. Here are some Halloween movies that fit whatever mood you're in!

Family: ¨Hocus Pocus¨ is a cute little Halloween tradition. It's the movie that everyone has been watching since they were ten.

The movie, set in Salem, Mass., is about three witches who are accidentally brought back to life after being sentenced to death more than 300 years ago. The witches are after the children of the town and only the teenagers who brought them to life can stop them. The problem is that no one believes their story.

Some of the famous cast includes Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker.

If nothing else, the movie will bring you back to your childhood days of coming home from trick-or-treating, relaxing in your witch costume after a long walk around the neighborhood, eating your Hershey bars and watching the three Sanderson sisters hunt down the children of Salem.

Newly Released: ¨House of Wax¨ was released Tuesday. While the acting isn't the best the movie is definitely a horror film.

A group of friends on their way to a football game have some car trouble. They make their way to the nearest town. The town is tiny with the main attraction being the House of Wax.

The statues look incredibly real and the friends soon find out that the wax figures are the corpses of unlucky visitors. Watch as Chad Michael Murray, Paris Hilton, Jared Padalecki and others try to escape the wax.

The concept of the movie is horrifying and with the right amount of blood and violence this makes for a perfect Halloween movie.

Classic: " Halloween" on Halloween, how appropriate. This is a classic that is still just as scary as it once was.

Michael Myers murdered his sister when he was six and has been institutionalized ever since. Fifteen years later he escapes and goes back to his hometown to terrorize everyone who remembers him.

Tony Moran, Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance star in the horrifying film.

This is truly a classic Halloween movie and will have you spooked out for weeks to come. Also check out Halloween 2-9.

Comedy: Other options for movies include "Scream," "I Know What You Did Last Summer," "The Blair Witch Project," "The Sixth Sense," "The Ring" and "The Haunting." Many of these flicks are intense thrillers, but also have some funny parts.

Instead of trying to cram all those movies into one night, why not just watch a combination. ¨Scary Movie¨ 1, 2 or 3 are hilarious parodies including all of those movies. While the plots of these movies aren't the best, you'll be screaming with laughter instead of horror.

Anna Farris, the Wayans brothers and Regina Hall are just a few of the stars that bring the sarcasm and mockery to "Scary Movie." If you're in the mood for laughs, but want to still say you watched something "scary," then this is your best option.

So fear not (depending on which movie you are watching), your Halloween won't be totally lame. Just go to the library, rent one of these movies and relax.
