Diversity is alive at Elon
University
A big selling point that Elon University uses to get
students to attend their school and bring national
recognition is their diversity on campus.
This might be a big selling point for the school, but is
diversity really alive at this school?
When thinking of the diversity issue, the first thing anyone
thinks about is race.
Then the comments about how there are such a few number of
black students compared to white students on campus come out.
If you ask almost anyone on campus, most students will
straight up say that there is no diversity at Elon, while
faculty and staff will usually tell you otherwise.
Maybe they really think Elon is diverse, or maybe they just
have no idea.
Overall, the student body at Elon has a pretty closed mind
when it comes to diversity on the campus. They look at it as
if it's just black and white.
There are so many more levels of diversity on campus that
Elon is great at promoting.
The most diverse part of Elon is in where its students come
from; the geography.
The student body is comprised of students from 44 states
across the United States, as well as from 42 countries around
the world. Students from the United States are an even mix
between northern and southern students.
This is what gives Elon such a unique culture as a southern
university.
Religion is another diverse area at Elon. Most schools have
primarily a large Christian community on campus, and
that's it.
At Elon, there are a little over 100 Jewish students, which
is a lot for a small private school with a Christian
affiliation. It is also possible to find students of other
religions, such as Buddhism and Muslim. All of these
different religions and their mixture bring a large,
religious community.
Another group of students that bring diversity to the
student body are the gay community.
In a changing world, this is one of the more important
groups to have on campus. A lot of people have personal
issues with this community, and the only way to make people
comfortable with them is to include them in your student
body.
This is important for a university who is starting to make
it big on the national scene.
Now people can still complain about diversity on campus, but
their argument should only hold race as their only point.
It is hard to say that the school is not diverse if you
really look at the whole picture.
Next time the topic comes up, don't be the ignorant one
in the debate.
There is diversity on campus and it is more prevalent than
it seems every day.
