Club sports continues a successful
spring

Club sports have enjoyed a successful first half of their
spring seasons, and hope to continue that into the second
half of the semester. Men's rugby, men's
lacrosse, and men's tennis lead the way with a combined
record of 8-1.
Despite only becoming a club sport this year the club tennis
team has already become one of the best in North Carolina.
The team has looked very impressive going 3-1 this
spring. They were undefeated this past fall and their
only loss this spring has been at the hands of N.C.
State. They have knocked off UNC-Wilmington, 8 matches to 5,
and UNC-Charlotte 18-2.
The men's lacrosse team looked strong again this spring,
starting, 3-0. The team has beaten some stiff
competition including 17th ranked Appalachian State.
Despite losing many players, the team is aiming to win its
conference.
They beat Appalachian State last week 10-4 and also beat
ECU, 7-6 in overtime, and Southern Virginia 10-5.
John Clark and Shea Coakley lead the team in scoring.
"The team looks strong," senior midfielder Jeff
Duffy said. "Our defense is strong and the young
guys are stepping it up."
The club volleyball team has been strong all year and is
currently the No. 1 club volleyball team in North
Carolina. They are ranked in the top 25 in the nation
and hope to continue their strong play in nationals, which
begin in April.
The team won the North Carolina Tournament in February and
hopes to win the national tournament.
The men's rugby team has looked very strong all year and
hopes to win the division this spring. Kyle Smith,
president of the team, has been solid and is one of the main
factors for the team's success.
The team is 2-0 and has crushed its first two opponents of
the spring.
They beat Davidson 36-3 and demoralized UNC-Charlotte
29-0. The divisional championships will be held in Elon
and will start March 27 at 7 p.m.
The roller hockey team joined a stronger division this
year and hope to continue their tradition of
excellence. The team has compiled a record of 16-9-2.
The team was just invited to the national tournament, which
will begin in April. Captains Jared Poupore, Jeff
Alduk, and Bill Stone lead the team.
Stone said the team has looked solid this weekend and is
hoping to continue that strong play in the national
tournament.
"Our young guys have really stepped up," Stone
said. "The goal scoring ability of Ryan Weekes and
Chris Adams are some of the main factors in our
success."
The women's soccer team got off to a slow start but
hopes to turn things around in the second half of the
season. So far they have compiled a record of 1-3 with
their victory coming against N.C. State.
The team plays this Sunday versus Davidson at 1 p.m.
The club baseball team has looked strong in wins over Duke
and Wake Forest.
Their record is 3-3 and the team is looking to win their
conference this spring. The team is led by Rob Kiser,
and they have a double header against VCU this Saturday at
home.
There will be a charity event on March 31, starting at 5:30
p.m., when the men's and women's lacrosse teams take
on Davidson. The club sports council asks that all
those who attend the game bring $1 that will be given to
Ronald McDonald House. The dollar will also enter you
into a raffle where you can win prizes.
