A phoenix isn’t usually a well recognized type of
animal, especially not as a mascot. However, this proved
different over the summer when Elon’s own mascot was
awarded several honors along with the all-female cheerleading
squad.
The Phoenix mascot and the squad attended the National
Cheerleading Association’s College Summer Camp in
Myrtle Beach, S.C. last month.
Elon’s unique mascot learned several skills and
techniques while at camp.
The Phoenix cheered, tumbled and danced its way to victory.
It was awarded most improved mascot as well as the
All-American mascot.
In addition to the mascot’s awards, the all-female
cheerleading squad was also successful. The girls’
received a bid to compete in the NCA Nationals competition.
This was a high honor for the girl’s cheerleading
program because they have never been recognized at such a
level before now.
“Camp was a very good experience for this team because
we have nine brand new girls on the squad to work into the
mix,” senior Kristin Souther said.
While at camp, the squad learned numerous new cheers,
chants, fight songs and band dances.
“We learned a lot at camp and I know this is going to
be an amazing year for us,” senior Joy Hartley
said.
The cheerleading squad received three blue ribbons in the
fight song, cheer and chant divisons.
The girls also won a trophy for the most improved
squad.
With the combined talent of the phoenix mascot and the
squad, the outlook for this year is great.
“This program is building momentum every year and
attracting more talent than ever,” said cheerleading
coach Sandra Bays.
The good experiences at summer camp proved to be beneficial
for the squad as well as the mascot, as it helped shape the
mold for the beginning of the fall season.
