Fall movies: From Bond to ‘Jackass’

Kate Ferris / Columnist

Summer is the time of big blockbusters– movies made to bring in the cash. This summer, we saw “Superman Returns,” “X-Men III,” the sequel to “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Miami Vice” and “Talladega Nights.” Some of the best movies usually open while school’s out.

Well, school may be back in session, but the good movies are still rolling.

Here are some movies to look out for in the coming months that can give you some relief from studying.

In September, be on the lookout for “Gridiron Gang” and “Haven,” both opening this Friday.

“Gridiron Gang” is a movie based on the true story of a probation officer who turns youth inmates into football players starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Orlando Bloom and Bill Paxton star in “Haven,” a story based around the corruption of the Cayman Islands, where the rich stash their cash.

Also coming out in September are “Jackass: Number Two” and “School for Scoundrels.”

“Jackass” needs no explanation. If you are into that kind of humor, the boys are back.

From the Weinstein brothers’ comes “School for Scoundrels,” featuring Jon Heder from “Napoleon Dynamite” and Billy Bob Thornton. Thornton plays a teacher in confidence-building, something Heder lacks as a New York City meter man.

Robin Williams stars in the highlight of October: “Man of the Year,” in which he portrays a political comedian who jokingly says he will run for president and does.

What happens when he wins?

Also coming in October is “Employee of the Month.” While the movie does have Jessica Simpson in it, my hopes lie on comedian Dane Cook to make this movie one to watch.

November brings a blonde-haired, blue-eyed James Bond. The new Bond film, “Casino Royale,” will open on November 17. The question on everyone’s mind is: will the new Bond be accepted or rejected?

Another movie to look out for in November is “Bobby.” Anthony Hopkins, William H. Macy, Elijah Wood and Demi Moore star in this chronicle of the night Robert Kennedy was assassinated.

If these movies do not strike your fancy, there are several Oscar-worthy films such as “Hollywoodland” with Adrien Brody and Diane Lane, “All the King’s Men” with Sean Penn and Jude Law, and Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed” with Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jack Nicholson.

All these movies and more are coming to a theatre near you in the coming months. Watch movie trailers at www.apple.com/trailers and find something that sparks your interest. Then, take a break from the stress and work of college and check one out.
