Cancer survivors share stories of struggle and triumph

Jonathan Fiedler/ Reporter

Cancer is among the most feared health problems in America today. The frightening part of this potentially deadly disease is that about 1,500 people die of cancer each day in the United States. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in America next to heart disease, with one in four deaths due to cancer.

In a five-year relative survival rate of all cancers diagnosed between 1995 and 2000, 64 percent of the cancer patients survived. Those who survive this disease live on with an inspirational testimony worth sharing with others. This is a narrative of four cancer survivors at Elon.

The weekend building up to Sept. 11 was lackluster in comparison to the previous four years. Last year, candles lined the fences surrounding Ground Zero. However, on Monday the site was just a metal grate with a few sparse flags and flowers.

Canned beer drinkers (77 percent) and those who opt for a mix of alcohol and canned energy drinks (70 percent) describe their romantic demeanor as “friendly and open.” Men and women who prefer energy drinks also define themselves as “super sexy” (11 percent) and “smooth as silk” (12 percent).

Diversity in Culture in the North and South

The majority of students know what the Mason-Dixon line is, or at least know what it stands for. For those who have no idea, the line stands as a separation between Northern and Southern states who fought on the Confederate or Yankee side during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. It borders Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.
