THE ROUND TABLE
This Week:

Mario, not so super, Williams
Back in April, the entire football world expected the
Houston Texans to pick either USC tailback Reggie Bush or
Texas quarterback Vince Young with the first pick in the NFL
draft. So naturally, everyone was stunned when the Texans
chose defensive end Mario Williams.
Analysts and fans everywhere, including this one, were
dumbfounded by the decision. Why in the world would the
Texans choose a defensive end with the Heisman Trophy winner
available? Why would they pass up such dynamic players; ones
who can change the course of a game in a single play? Well,
they did, and the Saints got Bush with the second
pick.
After the first game of the season, it’s clear that
the Texans made a poor choice.
Bush had 61 rushing yards, 58 receiving yards and 22 punt
return yards, for 123 total yards. He was all over the field
and had a definite impact on the Saints’ victory over
the Cleveland Browns.
Williams had three tackles, no sacks, and little if any
impact on the outcome of the game, which the Texans lost to
the Philadelphia Eagles.
Granted, the Eagles do have a decent offensive line and are
a better team than the Browns, but compared to Bush’s
effort, Williams was inconsequential.
Hopefully Williams will improve as the season progresses,
because if Bush keeps playing the way he did on Sunday, then
Texans fans will be wondering why head coach Gary Kubiak and
the team chose Mario Williams over one of the most dynamic
and explosive players to ever play college football.
