Coffee rivalry heats up between Acorn and Java City

Opening a new coffee stand in Koury Business Center stirs up competition on campus

Elon has always been known for its coffee establishment– the Acorn Coffee Shop. Students have always enjoyed stopping by Acorn, whether it be for lunch or to grab a coffee in between classes.

However, it looks as if Acorn will have some competition this year.
A second coffee shop opened on Elon’s campus this semester. Java City, which is located in the new Koury Business Center, offers gourmet coffee as well as various breakfast snacks.

Though Java City isn’t nearly as big as the Acorn Coffee shop, it provides students with a variety of coffee choices such as the Java-launch, similar to the Frappuccinos served at Starbucks. Yogurt, fruit and bagels are also sold at Java City.

“I like Java City because I am able to grab a quick coffee or snack right before heading to class in the business center,” senior Chloe Baker said. “It’s convenient and has a welcoming environment.”

Java City is fairly new and many students may not know about it. Its location in the new business center is nice for students on the opposite side of campus from where Acorn is located.

Acorn Coffee Shop has an extensive menu of Starbucks coffee, made–to–order deli sandwiches, salads, smoothies and a selection of muffins, bagels and pastries. Two computers with full Internet access are also available to use free of charge.

“I like Acorn because of the non-dining hall setting,” junior Kelly Chencharik said. “I love that I can use my meal plan and meal dollars there.”

This year, Acorn is offering sandwich and drink specials. Pre-made sandwiches such as the southwest turkey wrap or almond chicken salad croissant are available on specified days of the week. Drink specials, such as caramel apple cider and toffee nut lattes are being offered through Oct. 11.

For more information on specials, check out the dining services Web site.
