Soccer showdown with UNC-G

JustinHite /Sports Editor

The women’s soccer team faces off against the UNC-Greensboro Spartans in what many of the girls have marked on their calendars as a must win.

The entire team is still feeling the effects of the 3-0 loss in the middle of last season and knows that this game is vital to the success of the team.

Cross country commits to hard practices

Justin Hite / Sports Editor

On a two week hiatus the men and women’s cross country teams look ahead in hopes of a strong rebound race after disappointing 12th and seventh place finishes, respectively.

Both teams will be running in the Old North State Invitational in Greensboro on Sept. 23 and hope to emulate the success in the first race, when the teams finished first and second.

Where are the rivals?

Brian Giuffra/ Reporter

A rivalry between two schools extracts passion from fans and greatness from athletes. It increases the importance of every play in a game and every second on the clock. Rivalries amplify the importance of the game to everyone, the fans, the players and the coaches.

The passion found in the rivalry between Duke and UNC is not present between Elon and any another university. There are teams Elon calls its rival but the proximity, prestige and passion aren’t there. There are many reasons why Elon doesn’t have a serious rival. If it hopes to find one, Elon should look to neighboring schools with a strong overall athletic program.

Phoenix offense makes connection for the first time against Blue Hose

Brad Mclaughlin/Reporter

Under new head coach Pete Lembo, the Elon Phoenix are employing a new offense this year, and so far the team has improved each game. The Phoenix now run a spread offense which allows the team to move down the field faster and gives opposing defenses less time to get into formation. New quarterback Wes Pope has adjusted well to the offense and has shown increasing confidence with those around him.

Mason named to national team

Jeff Rickel/ Reporter

One word to describe sophomore Will Mason, Elon’s first player to be named to the Soccer America Team of the Week, is humble.

Mason said he did not expect the award. In fact, he didn’t even know he received the honor until his roommate saw it online and told him about it. He also takes no individual credit for the honor.

Will Mason was named to the national team of the week. The Phoenix fell out of the top 25.
