THE ROUND TABLE

This Week:

Mike Vivenzio

Welcome back, New Orleans

A city left to ruins, lives without hope. That was the case in New Orleans only one year ago. It is hard to believe the devastation of Hurricane Katrina was only a year ago, but now the city has been rebuilt, restructured and revived. Monday will mark the largest professional sporting event the city has hosted since Katrina.

The New Orleans Saints will take on the Atlanta Falcons in a match-up of two undefeated teams. The winner will not only take over first place in the NFC South but also win a pivotal division game early in the season. However, none of the focus will be on the teams on the field. The attention will be where it belongs; on the city and most importantly on the fans. The Saints, New Orleans’ team, will be like the Prodigal Son; they went away and have now come home with a triumphant return to the city, they bring hope. After being one of the worst teams in the league last year, finishing the season with only three wins and never playing a “home” game, the Saints have given the city restored hope.

Through tough times, sports are what unites people and allows an outlet, something to take their minds off a tragedy.

The Saints, with their return to the city, will allow the city its first chance to breathe new life. The NFL is doing this the right way, Monday Night Football, where all eyes will be on New Orleans. The exact way all eyes were on the city a year ago, except this time the tears will be of happiness. The NFL got this right. Good luck to the city, but rather than good luck, welcome back and welcome home.
