Soccer showdown with UNC-G Justin Hite/ Sports Editor
The women’s soccer team faces off against the
UNC-Greensboro Spartans in what many of the girls have marked
on their calendars as a must win.
The entire team is still feeling the effects of the 3-0 loss
in the middle of last season and knows that this game is
vital to the success of the team.
“This is a huge game,” forward Alisa Pettit,
senior, said. “We’ve never beaten UNC-G in my
three years here. It’s always been a game that we walk
off the field saying we should have won or we could have won.
So for me to go out with a win against UNC-G would probably
be just as big as the conference tournament.”
Pettit and the Phoenix see the match-up with the Spartans as
a potential springboard into the conference schedule. UNC-G
is the first conference game for the Phoenix and a win could
propel the team into a strong standing in the
conference.
The Phoenix is coming off a disappointing road trip to
Jacksonville, Fla., in which the team went 0-2 with two close
losses. The Phoenix have had an entire week to prepare for
its match-up with the rival Spartans.
“You always have your big opponents and your
rivals,” coach Chris Webb said. “This is probably
at the top of the list. They really want this game more than
any game in the season.”
The obvious consensus among the entire team is that this
game is the most important game of the season and it is the
one that Elon wants more than any other game.
UNC-G is a perennial threat in the Southern Conference, so a
win for the Phoenix would not only give bragging rights for
the first time in a few years but it would also prove that
they are a potential threat to the rest of the
conference.
“Elon has always been the underdog and UNC-G has
always been a powerhouse,” goalie Lizz Johnson,
sophomore, said. “So to turn the tables would be
awesome.”
With a lot of young girls and many still graduating, the
Phoenix is on its way up in the standings, and a win against
the Spartans could prove more than just a week’s worth
of work.
