Burlington:
More than meets the eye Kate Ferris/ Columnist
It is easy to say that a person has to drive 20 minutes to
Greensboro or 45 minutes to Raleigh just to find
entertainment. It is easy to think there is nothing to do
around Elon except going to the movies, going out to eat or
going to Target. Things can get rather monotonous.
In reality, there is more to Burlington than meets the eye.
There are many things to do in and around Burlington that can
break the monotony.
Country Club Lanes West may be the most familiar to Elon
students. Don’t let the outside of the building scare
you away – the upkeep on the inside is much better.
This bowling alley has more than enough lanes to play on,
several pool tables, a good concession stand and a giant game
room. Try going when they offer special discounted
rates.
Like to dig right in? The Mad Platter studio on South Church
Street is artsy fun. If you are feeling a little creative,
this is the place. They have several pre-made pottery items,
from margarita glasses to figurines and piggy banks. Just
pick your pottery, paint and go. They also have special rates
for large groups.
Bring back old times, back when the cool thing to do was
roller skating and inline skates were not even invented yet.
Roll About Skating Center in Burlington brings back middle
school memories when they hold a special school night every
month and only those from your school could get in. Which can
you handle, the big rink or the little rink?
Batting cages are not just for baseball players. Whether you
need to let a little aggression out or just want to see who
can swing the hardest, try Kendallstick Park batting cages
near South Church Street and St. Mark’s Church Road.
They close for the winter, so go while you still can.
Mid-terms have arrived, so do yourself a favor and relieve
some stress.
Rather just watch the action? Near the Burlington Indians
stadium is a BMX (Motocross) track that holds races every
Friday night from now until Dec. 8.
Or get a taste of the real South and try Ace Speedway for
some good ole’ southern stock car racing. They’re
letting Elon students in free with tickets off their Web site
after the football game Oct. 21.
Of course, there is always the freebie fun, good for any
college student.
The Burlington City Park has an old-fashioned carousel,
softball fields, tennis center, aquatics center and
more.
A park closer to home is the Beth Schmidt Park in Elon.
While it is still a rather small park, it has a 9-hole disc
golf course like Danieley Center.
Some of these may be something new. Some of these are old
favorites. They may even remind you of high school or
earlier. However, some good juvenile fun is nice every once
and awhile. You know you love it.
