Emoticons are
pictographs that share a message. They represent
teeny-tiny facial expressions.
You can make them by using the keys on
a typical computer keyboard in various

Binary Code: The Language of 1's and
0's
Computer scientists came up with ASCII, American
Standard Code for Information Exchange, so teletype
machines and computers could share information. Most
modern character encodings used in communications devices
that use text have a historical basis in ASCII. It was
first published in the 1960s. It is a seven-bit code,
meaning that it uses bit patterns arranged in groups of
seven to represent letters of the alphabet and other
information. It was developed from the codes used for
telegraphs. This chart shows a typical ASCII code
set.
Definitions for
Text-Messaging Shorthand
Abbreviated language has always been a tool in using
computers for communications. It saves time online, and
it also makes it fun, because only "insiders"
know the code! People who use instant-message programs on
computers or text-messaging on their cell phones often
use shorthand to save time or space. Read a few examples
here and share them with your family and friends! You and
your buddies can be code geniuses!
