Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global
Economy
McCrary Theatre, 7:30 p.m.
Dr. Kevin Bales, an internationally recognized authority on
contemporary
slavery, is President of Free the Slaves, the U.S. sister
organization of
Anti-Slavery International, and Visiting Professor at the
Croft Institute for International Studies at the University
of Mississippi. In Disposable People:
New Slavery in the Global Economy, he reveals the
nature of present day
bondage and uncovers the economic and social forces that
sustain this
deplorable global phenomenon. The book was nominated for a
Pulitzer
Prize, and published in ten languages.
Bales received his Ph.D. from The London School of
Economics. He was a consultant to the UN Global Program on
Human Trafficking and has advised
the US, British, Irish, Norwegian, and Nepali governments,
as well as
the ECOWAS Community, on slavery and human trafficking
policy.
In his lecture at McCrary Theatre, Bales will present
findings from a National Institute of Justice sponsored
research project into human trafficking in
the United States. Tentative findings from the research
include the
importance of intelligence in identifying trafficking cases,
the importance
of “good Samaritans,” the gap between the number
of cases federal agencies
can prosecute and the actual number of cases, a lack of
clear divisions of responsibility in the investigation of
cases as well as the basic tools to
investigate and prosecute known cases. He will concludes
with significant recommendations for increasing
prosecutions of human traffickers.
