Jonathan Osorio
"Songs of Our Native Selves"
Sponsored by Religious Studies and the Liberal Arts
Forum
Tuesday,
November 13, Whitley Auditorium, 7:30 p.m.
Dr. Osorio is director of the Kamakakuokalani Center for
Hawaiian Studies
at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His writing and
lectures
have influenced several of the Hawaii study abroad classes
during Elon’s winter term. Osorio’s performance
and lecture presentation argue for the centrality of
music
and composition as historical texts, and trace the effects
of literacy, modernity
and colonialism on Hawaiian music and identity.
