Experiential
Education
In surveys of graduates,
80% reported having done a co-op or internship
(includes credit and non-credit experiences)
during their time at Elon. Experiential Education
is learning that occurs through active
involvement in what is being studied - direct
experience with the subject matter, in addition
to reading or hearing about it. Learning
theorists conclude that experience is a necessary
component for a complete cycle of learning. In
internships and co-ops, students learn by taking
on carefully monitored, relevant roles as workers
in organizations, and by observing and reflecting
on what happens while they are on the job. Almost
all academic departments at Elon University offer
these opportunities.
The Elon University General
Studies Program promotes experiential learning by
requiring that students complete an Experiential
Learning Requirement unit before graduation.
Internships and co-ops are included in the list
of activities that will satisfy this requirement.
Information about numerous
internship programs is available through the
Career Center. A premier program operated by The
Washington Center in Washington, DC, offers
internship placements in any major, as well as
academic seminars on various topics. On the North
Carolina state level, the North Carolina State
Government Internship Program and the Institute
of Government Summer Intern Program are
noteworthy.
If you are interested in
learning more about these programs and other
internship/co-op opportunities, please contact
the Elon Career Center or explore the Web links
on this site.
