RESUME SAMPLES

      Sample 1           Sample 2           Sample 3

RESUME TIPS

  • Write your own resume.

  • Keep resume short -- preferred length is one page. Do not use sentences or personal pronouns. Leave out discriminatory information (photo, height, weight, gender, health, marital status, etc.).

  • Write a brief, specific employment objective.

  • List jobs, experiences, activities, etc. in reverse chronological order.

  • Emphasize marketable skills and relevant accomplishments.

  • Use action words such as "supervised, managed, directed" instead of "My duties included..." Use present tense for current jobs.

  • Design layout for easy readability. Use tabs and bullets. Select a font that is easy to read.

  • Print on high quality paper, using a laser printer if possible. Check the watermark.
Always send a cover letter with your resume.

Good resumes come in many styles. For examples and more resume writing information, check in the Career Center Library and meet with a career advisor.

RESUME OUTLINE CONTACT INFORMATION
Name (All caps and bold; a slightly larger font is acceptable)
Address (Current and permanent if appropriate)
Telephone (Include area code)
E-mail Address

OBJECTIVE
State the type of position you seek and the career field. Keep it short and to the point. If you do not include an objective on your resume, due to space limitations or unlimited options, you must include it in your cover letter.

EDUCATION
List (in reverse chronological order) the colleges you have attended and from which you have graduated, or expect to graduate. Indicate degree, date of graduation, major, minor and concentrations. GPA and relevant course work are optional. Academic honors, study abroad and language proficiency may be included here or in a separate HONORS, ACTIVITIES or SKILLS section. List percentage of college education self-financed if applicable.

SKILLS
List any special skills (computer, language, equipment, special training, etc.)

EXPERIENCE
List paid and volunteer experience in reverse chronological order. Include position title, name and location of company or organization, and dates. Emphasize duties, skills and accomplishments -- cite numbers and specifics. May divide experience into descriptive categories (i.e., Internship Experience, Leadership Experience, Accounting Experience, etc.)

HONORS/ACTIVITIES
Indicate honors, awards, activities and memberships in and out of college. May include high school honors/activities only in special circumstances. Consider dividing HONORS and ACTIVITIES into separate sections if you have several of each. Consider moving those activities that were more substantial (i.e., holding an office, coordinating an event, etc.) to experience section.

REFERENCES
Do not list references on the resume, but be prepared to provide them upon request. On a separate page, list 3-6 references, which may include professors, staff members, and current/past employers. Your name should be center and bold at the top followed by each reference's name, title, company/school, work address, work phone, and email. Always request permission before listing someone as a reference, and supply each person with a copy of your resume.

COMPUTER-FRIENDLY RESUME TIPS More organizations in the future will let the computer be the first point of contact upon receiving your resume. To ensure that your resume can be scanned into a computer, consider the following suggestions in constructing your resume:

  • Keep it simple. Use a clear design and only one font style.

  • Use keywords that are specific to your field

  • Use popular, plain fonts such as Arial, Times New Roman or Helvetica.

  • Use a 11 to 12 point font size for text and 12 to 14 point font size for headings.

  • Paper: Use a light color (soft white is best) and standard size paper (8-1/2 x 11 inch). Print on one side.

  • Use all caps and/or bold for emphasis, not italics, script or underlining.

  • Avoid graphics and shading. Do not compress spaces between letters.

  • Do not use horizontal and vertical lines. Lines confuse the computer.

  • Avoid stapling or folding your resume. If you must fold, do not fold on a line of text.

  • Your name should be the first readable item on each page.
