Schedule of Events

Below is a list of the events we have scheduled for Family Weekend 2014 along with a number of regular campus activities you may want to participate in.  A full schedule with all locations will be included in your registration packets when you arrive.  We look forward to seeing and visiting with you! 

* When purchasing tickets to any of the events listed below, please remember to include your student in your total.

Friday, September 19, 2014

1:30 p.m.
Space provided for Jummah Prayer, Numen Lumen Pavilion
The Truitt Center for Religious & Spiritual Life in the Numen Lumen Pavilion has an arranged space and provides rugs for Jummah prayer.

1:30 p.m. (PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED)
Golf Tournament
Hosted by the Phoenix Club, the tournament will be a shotgun start.  Entry fee ($65 per person) includes greens fee, cart, beverages and award. Participants should plan to spend most of the afternoon on the golf course.

3 – 7 p.m.
Check In and On-Site Registration, Koury Athletic Center Concourse
Pick up your registration packet which includes a schedule for the weekend, your student’s schedule for meeting with faculty on Saturday morning, tickets for events and/or meals, and other useful information.

3 – 10 p.m.
Koury Center Open Recreation, Campus Recreation, Koury Athletic Center
A pass to use the Koury Athletic Center is available with your registration packet.  The “Rec Center,” which houses Beck Pool and the Stewart Fitness Center, includes a cardio-fitness room, free weight room, five racquetball courts and an aerobics studio.  Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and may not use the cardio-fitness room.

4 – 6 p.m.
Hospitality Center, Student Center, Moseley Center
The Elon Parents Council invites you to stop by for refreshments and a moment of rest between activities.

7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. (SOLD OUT - TICKETED EVENT: $15)
Collage Concert, Yeager Recital Hall, Center for the Arts
Elon’s Performing Arts will present an exciting collage of entertainment performed by our talented students!

8:30 p.m.
The Music Department Faculty Concert, Whitley Auditorium
Faculty artists invite Elon families and friends to a mixed program for voice, piano, organ, percussion, wind and brass.  This program has been a big hit since it began in 1999 - come and enjoy what is sure to be a great show.

An open-mic night with our amazingly talented students!  You don’t want to miss this!

Fun and games for siblings ages 6-12.

9 – 9:30 a.m.
University Update, McCrary Theatre, Center for the Arts
Dr. Steven House, university provost, will welcome families and bring you up to date on the university.

9:30 – 11 a.m.
"Meet and Greet" Professors
Enjoy informal conversations with your student’s professors.  Faculty members’ locations are printed on your student’s guide that is available at registration.

9:45 – 10:30 a.m.

Mini Classes
Recipients of the Daniels-Danieley Excellence in Teaching Award and other distinguished faculty and staff will teach these classes.  A full list of session topics, descriptions, and locations will be provided at registration.

12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. (TICKETED EVENT: $7 for adults/$5 for children)
Family Weekend Picnic Lunch, Global Neighborhood Promenade
Enjoy a healthy lunch with your student near lovely Lake Mary Nell.  (Vegetarian and gluten free options are available with online registration pre-orders.)  Student meal plans are not able to be honored at this event. 

1 – 3 p.m.
Campus Rec Fest, Phoenix Club Sports Fields
Experience Campus Rec! Families and friends can participate in pick-up soccer or softball games and cheer on the Elon Club Sports teams competing on the Phoenix Club Sport Fields! 

1:30 – 3 p.m. (AT CAPACITY, PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED)
For Grandparents: Elon University Campus Tour
Join us for a special campus tour just for grandparents.  Get an insider’s view of the university and enjoy the beauty of the campus, which is a designated botanical garden and a member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta.  Transportation by bus will depart from the Center for the Arts.

1:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Greek Life at Elon: What You as a Parent Need to Know, Moseley 215
Is your son or daughter interested in joining a fraternity or sorority?  Come learn about our Greek community, responsibilities and obligations of membership, and have your recruitment process questions answered.

4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. (SOLD OUT - TICKETED EVENT: $15)

Elon’s Performing Arts will present an exciting collage of entertainment performed by our talented students!

4:00 – 5:30 p.m.
Silver Jubilee Catholic Mass, McCrary Theatre
Elon Catholic Campus Ministry invites all Catholic students and families to celebrate its 25th Anniversary Mass with Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of the Diocese of Raleigh, NC, and Father Gerry Waterman, OFM Conv. - Catholic Campus Minister.  Doors open at 3:30 p.m.

4:00 – 6:30 p.m. (TICKETED EVENT: $12 for adults/$7 for children)
Family Weekend Tailgate, Global Neighborhood Promenade
Join us for a fun-filled tailgate event and a traditional North Carolina BBQ with western style chopped barbecue pork and chicken plus all the fixin’s.  (Vegetarian and gluten free options are available with online registration pre-orders.)  Student meal plans are not able to be honored at this event.

4:30 p.m.
The Phoenix Walk, Global Neighborhood Promenade to Rhodes Stadium
You won’t want to miss cheering on the football team as they make their way from the tailgate into the stadium led by the band and cheerleaders.

5:30 – 6:45 p.m.  (TICKETED EVENT: $35)
Silver Jubilee Dinner, McKinnon Hall, Moseley Center
Elon Catholic Campus Ministry continues the celebration with a special 25th Anniversary "tailgate" in McKinnon Hall immediately following Mass.  Honored guests include Bishop Michael F. Burbidge and Provost Steven House.  (Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available with online registration pre-orders.)  Student meal plans are not able to be honored at this event.

7 p.m. (TICKETED EVENT)
Football Game, Rhodes Stadium
Cheer the Phoenix, led by head coach Rich Skrosky, as they take on the UNC Charlotte 49ers.  This game is expected to sell out, so be sure to purchase your tickets soon. To purchase tickets, contact the Elon Athletic Ticket Office at (336) 278-6750. (If you need assistance with tickets you have already purchased, visit the ticket office in the Koury Athletic Center until 5 p.m. on Friday or at the ticket window at Rhodes Stadium on Saturday beginning at 5:15 p.m.)

10 p.m.
SUBcinema, Global Neighborhood Quad
Come out to the Student Union Board's weekly movie on the lawn for this week's special Family Weekend movie, 90s throwback "Space Jam!"  Free popcorn – just bring your family or friends!

Coffee at the President’s Home
Enjoy a continental breakfast with university officials at Maynard House prior to the worship service.  Transportation will be provided from McMichael parking lot.  (The last bus will leave at 9:40 a.m.)

11 a.m.
Hillel Bagel Brunch, McKinnon Hall, Moseley Center
Elon Hillel welcomes all Jewish students, families, faculty, and staff for a catered bagel brunch.

11 a.m.
Sunday Worship: An Ecumenical Protestant Service, Sacred Space, Numen Lumen Pavilion
University Chaplain Jan Fuller and the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life will lead this service which is open to all members of our community.
