Family Weekend Agenda & Events

Below is a list of the events we currently have scheduled for Family Weekend 2012. Additions or updates will be posted as they are made available, and a full schedule with locations will be included in your registration packets when you arrive.  We look forward to seeing and visiting with you! 

* When purchasing tickets to any of the events listed below, please remember to include your student in your total.

Friday, September 28, 2012

1 p.m.
Space provided for Jummah Prayer, Room 216 for women and Room 217 for men, Moseley Center
The Truitt Center for Religious & Spiritual Life has arranged for space and leadership of Jummah prayer.

1:30 p.m.
Golf Tournament, Indian Valley Golf Course (TICKETED EVENT*)
Hosted by the Phoenix Club, the tournament will be a shotgun start. Entry fee ($65 per person) includes greens fee, cart, beverages and award. Participants should plan to spend most of the afternoon on the golf course.

3 – 7 p.m.
Check In, Koury Athletics Center Concourse
Pick up your registration packet which includes a schedule for the weekend, your student’s schedule for meeting with faculty on Saturday morning, tickets for events and/or the picnic, and other useful information. 

3 – 8 p.m.
Koury Center Open Recreation
You will find a pass to visit the Koury Athletic Center in your Family Weekend packet from Registration.  The “Rec Center,” which houses Beck Pool and the Stewart Fitness Center, includes a cardio-fitness room, free weight room, five racquetball courts and an aerobics studio. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and may not use the cardio-fitness room.

4 – 6 p.m.
Hospitality Center
The Elon Parents Council invites all families to stop by for refreshments and a moment of rest between activities.

5:30 p.m.
Kabbalat Shabbat  
Elon Hillel welcomes all Jewish students and their families to enjoy a short ceremony welcoming Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath, with candles, fresh challah, and grape juice.  

7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. (TICKETED EVENT*)
Collage Concert

The Department of Performing Arts will present an exciting collage of entertainment presented by our talented students!  (This event sells out extremely quickly.)

7 p.m.
Women's Soccer at Rudd Field
The Elon Phoenix vs. The Citadel (no tickets needed)

8:30 p.m.
The Music Department Faculty Concert, Whitley Auditorium 
Faculty artists invite Elon families and friends to a mixed program for voice, piano, organ, percussion, wind and brass.  This program has been a big hit since it began in 1999.  Come and enjoy what is sure to be a great show.

An open-mic night with student talent.

President’s Update
Leo M. Lambert, university president, will bring parents up to date on the university.

9 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Sibling Activities
Fun and games for siblings ages 6-12.

9:30 – 11 a.m.
"Meet and Greet" Professors
Enjoy informal conversations with your student’s professors. Faculty members’ locations are printed on the student guide that you receive in your Registration packet.

9:45 – 10:30 a.m.
For Grandparents: Seminar I
Choose from these interesting seminars presented by our distinguished past and present faculty and staff.  A list of the seminars will be located in your registration packet.

  • Writing the Story of Your Life for Your Grandchildren
    presented by Rev. Richard McBride, Chaplain Emeritus
  • Public Opinion Polling and Elections: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
    presented by Ken Fernandez, PhD, Assistant Professor and Director of the Elon University Poll

10 – 11:30 a.m.
Hospitality Center
Parents Council members will be on hand to answer questions, and refreshments will be served.

10:45 – 11:30 a.m.
For Grandparents: Seminar II, Center for the Arts
Choose from several interesting seminars presented by our distinguished past and present faculty and staff. A list of the seminars will be located in your registration packet.

11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Mini Classes
These classes are a good example of exciting classes held at Elon through out the year. Recipients of the Daniels-Danieley Excellence in Teaching Award and other distinguished faculty and staff will teach these classes. A full list of session topics will be located in your registration packet. (Mini Classes are designed for parents)

Family Weekend Picnic

$12.00 adults and children $7.00 (under 12)
A tailgate lunch of chicken, western Carolina style chopped barbecue pork and all the fixin’s.  A vegetarian option  is also available upon request, there will also be gluten free options available. Tickets should be purchased with your registration. Student meal plans are not able to be honored at this event; if they will be joining you, please include them in your ticket order.

Football Game

The Elon Phoenix vs. Wofford
Cheer the Phoenix as they take on the Wofford Terriers. This game is expected to be near capacity so, be sure to purchase your tickets early.  This is done separately from our Family Weekend registration; visit www.elonphoenix.com and click on the ticket button to purchase a ticket or call the Ticket Office at 336-278-6750.  (Tickets for individual games go on sale August 1, 2012.) 

1:30 – 3:00 p.m. (PRE-ISSUED, TICKETED EVENT*)
For Grandparents: Elon University Campus Tour

Not a football fan? Join us for a special campus tour just for grandparents. Get an insider’s view of the university and enjoy the beauty of the campus, which is a designated botanical garden and a member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta. Transportation by bus is included. Space is limited.

5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Catholic Mass and Open House
Fr. Gerry Waterman will celebrate Mass with students, families, and friends at 5:30 p.m. in the Elon Community Church. A reception with light refreshments will follow at the Community Life Center there at the church.

6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. (TICKETED EVENT*)

“SUBCinema”
Come out to the Student Union Board's weekly movie on the lawn for this week's special Family Weekend movie, Brave! Free popcorn – just bring your family or friends!

Sunday, September 30, 2012

8:30 – 10 a.m.
Coffee at the President’s Home
Enjoy a continental breakfast with Leo and Laurie Lambert at Maynard House prior to the worship service. Transportation will be provided from Boney Fountain in the Moseley Center. (The last bus will leave the Moseley Center at 9:40 am.)

10:00 a.m. – 12 noon
Hillel Bagel Brunch
Elon Hillel welcomes all Jewish students, friends families, faculty, and staff for a catered bagel brunch.

11 a.m.
Family Weekend Protestant Worship Service (Whitley Auditorium)
University Chaplain Jan Fuller and the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life will lead this service which is open to all members of our community.

2 p.m.
Women's Soccer at Rudd Field
The Elon Phoenix vs. College of Charleston (no tickets needed)

2 p.m.
Dance in the Landscape presented by Elon Dance Company, Koury Business Center 
Students perform and explore the use of site specifics and the sense of dancing with nature. Directed and choreographed by Jason Aryeh; sponsored by the Department of Performing Arts.
