Family Weekend Agenda & Events

Below is a list of the events we have scheduled for Family Weekend 2014 along with a number of regular campus activities you may want to participate in.  A full schedule with all locations will be included in your registration packets when you arrive.  We look forward to seeing and visiting with you! 

* When purchasing tickets to any of the events listed below, please remember to include your student in your total.

Friday, September 19, 2014

1:30 p.m.
Space provided for Jummah Prayer, Numen Lumen Pavilion
The Truitt Center for Religious & Spiritual Life has arranged a space and provides rugs for Jummah prayer.

Golf Tournament
Hosted by the Phoenix Club, the tournament will be a shotgun start. Entry fee ($65 per person) includes greens fee, cart, beverages and award. Participants should plan to spend most of the afternoon on the golf course.

3 – 7 p.m.
Check In and On-Site Registration, Koury Athletic Center Concourse
Pick up your registration packet which includes a schedule for the weekend, your student’s schedule for meeting with faculty on Saturday morning, tickets for events and/or the picnic, and other useful information.

3 – 10 p.m.
Koury Center Open Recreation, Campus Recreation, Koury Athletic Center
A pass to use the Koury Athletic Center is available with your registration packet.  The “Rec Center,” which houses Beck Pool and the Stewart Fitness Center, includes a cardio-fitness room, free weight room, five racquetball courts and an aerobics studio. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and may not use the cardio-fitness room.

3 – 6 p.m.
Academic and Student Life Departmental Open Houses

4 – 6 p.m.
Hospitality Center, Student Center, Moseley Center
The Elon Parents Council invites you to stop by for refreshments and a moment of rest between activities.

5:30 p.m.
Kabbalat Shabbat,  Sklut Hillel Center
Elon Hillel welcomes all Jewish students and their families to enjoy a short ceremony welcoming Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath, with candles, fresh challah, and grape juice. 

7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. (TICKETED EVENT)
Collage Concert
Elon’s Performing Arts will present an exciting collage of entertainment performed by our talented students!

8:30 p.m.
The Music Department Faculty Concert, Whitley Auditorium
Faculty artists invite Elon families and friends to a mixed program for voice, piano, organ, percussion, wind and brass.  This program has been a big hit since it began in 1999 - come and enjoy what is sure to be a great show.

SUBlive!, College Street Taphouse
An open-mic night with our amazingly talented students!  You don’t want to miss this!

Join us to check-in if you weren’t able to make it on Friday, and a continental breakfast is served from 8–10 a.m.

8:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Sibling Activities, McKinnon Hall, Moseley Center
Fun and games for siblings ages 6-12.

9 – 9:30 a.m.
University Update, McCrary Theatre, Center for the Arts
Dr. Steven House, university provost, will welcome families and bring you up to date on the university.

9:30 – 11 a.m.
"Meet and Greet" Professors
Enjoy informal conversations with your student’s professors. Faculty members’ locations are printed on your student’s guide that is available in Registration.

9:45 – 10:30 a.m.
For Grandparents: Seminar I
Select one of the following sessions (details to come):
-   Dr. Jean Rattigan-Rohr, Faculty Administrative Fellow, Assistant to the President, Director of the Center for Access & Success, Associate Professor 
-   Dr. Steve Friedland, Senior Scholar and Professor of Law 

10 – 11:30 a.m.
Hospitality Center, Student Center, Moseley Center
Parents Council members will be on hand to answer questions, and refreshments will be served.

10:45 – 11:30 a.m.
For Grandparents: Seminar II:
Select one of the following sessions (details to come):
-   Dr. Earl Danieley, President Emeritus and Associate Professor of Chemistry
-   Dr. Paul Parsons, Dean, School of Communications

11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Mini Classes
Recipients of the Daniels-Danieley Excellence in Teaching Award and other distinguished faculty and staff will teach these classes. A full list of session topics, descriptions, and locations is on another handout.

Family Weekend Tailgate
A traditional North Carolina BBQ tailgate with chicken and western style chopped barbecue pork plus all the fixin’s. (Vegetarian and gluten free options are available with online registration pre-orders.) Student meal plans are not able to be honored at this event.

Football Game, Rhodes Stadium
Cheer the Phoenix as they take on the UNC Charlotte 49ers.  This game is expected to sell out, so if you haven’t already purchased tickets and would like to see if there are any remaining, visit the ticket office in the Koury Athletic Center until 5 p.m. on Friday or at the ticket window at Rhodes Stadium on Saturday beginning at 12 noon. If you need assistance with tickets you have already purchased, visit the ticket offices during those same times.
Want to help cheer on the football team as they prepare for the big game? Come out to Bank of America Drive (between Rudd Field and Latham Park) before the game to watch the team make their way into the stadium led by the band and cheerleaders.

For Grandparents: Elon University Campus Tour
Join us for a special campus tour just for grandparents. Get an insider’s view of the university and enjoy the beauty of the campus, which is a designated botanical garden and a member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta. Transportation by bus will depart from the Moseley Center.

Silver Jubilee Catholic Mass, McCrary Theatre
Elon Catholic Campus Ministry invites all Catholic students and families to celebrate Mass with Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of the Diocese of Raleigh, NC, and Father Gerry Waterman, Catholic Campus Minister. Mass will be followed by a Meet & Greet with the Bishop and Fr. Gerry in the Isabella Cannon Room and patio (light refreshments). 

7:30 – 9:30 p.m. (TICKETED EVENT)
Silver Jubilee Dinner, McKinnon Hall, Moseley Center
Elon Catholic Campus Ministry presents a dinner in honor of its Silver Jubilee. Celebrate 25 years of Catholic ministry to the Elon community with a dinner buffet and live music. Honored guests include Bishop Michael F. Burbidge and Provost Steven House. 

10 p.m.
SUBcinema, Young Commons
Come out to the Student Union Board's weekly movie on the lawn for this week's special Family Weekend movie.   Free popcorn – just bring your family or friends!

8:30 – 10 a.m.
Coffee at the President’s Home
Enjoy a continental breakfast with university officials at Maynard House prior to the worship service. Transportation will be provided from Boney Fountain in the Moseley Center.  (The last bus will leave the Moseley Center at 9:40 a.m.)

10:00 a.m.
Hillel Bagel Brunch
Elon Hillel welcomes all Jewish students, families, faculty, and staff for a catered bagel brunch.

11 a.m.
Sunday Worship: An Ecumenical Protestant Service, Sacred Space, Numen Lumen
University Chaplain Jan Fuller and the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life will lead this service which is open to all members of our community.
