Reporting Suspected Violations

This page contains information on reporting suspected honor code violations, including academic policy cases and social policy cases.

Because judicial proceedings for social and academic policy charges are to be conducted expeditiously, prompt reporting (within two weeks of the incident) is encouraged. The length of time between the incident and when it is reported is a consideration in whether the University will pursue charges. Reports received 6 months or more after an incident will normally not be considered for adjudication. Students will not be penalized or discriminated against in any way for reporting incidents, but any student who knowingly files a false or malicious complaint may be charged with lying under the social honor code. Judicial proceedings will be informal, fair and as expeditious as possible.

Academic Policies
Elon faculty members who suspect a student or students of violating Academic Policies will schedule an appointment with the students/s (either individually or as a group, to be determined by the professor). Elon students who witness an academic violation are expected to report the violation to the faculty member, along with any information to substantiate their charge.

During the initial meeting, the professor will explain the basis of the Academic Policy charge, and will share supporting information, if available, with the student. The purpose of this meeting is not to question charges or negotiate sanctions, but rather to make sure the student understands the professor's charge against him/her and to sign the form indicating whether the student will or will not take responsibility for the offense.

Social Policies
Any member of the Elon University community can report a violation of campus policies by filing an Elon University Incident Report with the Office of Judicial Affairs, Moseley Center 211. The incident will be investigated, and if disciplinary charges are warranted, it will be referred to the appropriate administrative hearing officer or honor board.
