2011.19 Hazing

Definition - any action or situation created, either directly or through innuendo, that jeopardizes the student’s psychological, emotional, or physical well being, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate. Examples include but are not limited to:

  1. Subtle hazing – behaviors that emphasize a power imbalance between new members/rookies and other members of the group or team. 
  2. Harassment hazing – behaviors that cause emotional anguish or physical discomfort in order to feel like a part of the group. Harassment hazing confuses, frustrates, and causes undue stress for new members/rookies.
  3. Violent hazing – behaviors that have the potential to cause physical and/or emotional or psychological harm.

Sanctions
Individuals - normally, not less than preliminary suspension with possible permanent separation; educational program or project, and campus restitution hours.
Organizations - normally, not less than loss of campus housing and suspension of official university recognition for one academic year with possible permanent removal of official university recognition.
