Friday, January 18, noon: Join the Elon community and Lock Arms for Peace as we walk from Young Commons to Moseley (yes, on the grass!), pausing to think about past struggles, symbolically bury the violence and oppression we've faced in the last year, and look forward to working together for peace and harmony. Sponsored by the MultiCultural Center and our University Chaplain, Jan Fuller, open to all members of the community, and a welcome reminder of Dr. King's important call to work together for justice everywhere and for everyone!
Tuesday, January 22, 7pm: Brother Outsider. Join us for a screening of this documentary about the life of Bayard Rustin, openly gay social justice activist and important colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We'll be in McEwen 011.
Aug 30: LGBTQIA New Student Welcome. For the first time ever, we will be hosting a welcoming event for new students from across the rainbow. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, or Ally: you're all welcome at Elon, but let's make it official! Join us for refreshments, a brief run-down on what's available to you as a new member of our communities, and some meet-n-greet. (Shy? That's okay! Come and be shy. Not ready to stake your place in the alphabet? That's okay! Come and be indeterminate. No previous experience or naming necessary.) LGBTQ Resource Room, Powell House, 5:45pm.
Aug 31: LGBTQ Resource Room Open House. Join folks from across the Elon community and beyond in celebrating the opening of the LGBTQ Resource Room in Powell House. 3-5pm, drop by anytime for refreshments and to see the space and meet our staff.

Sept 18: Amendment One: What Really Happened? Two of Elon's finest faculty, Political Science Professor Laura Roselle and Law School Professor Sonya Garza will give their take on what the poll numbers really meant and what impact the amendment may be having on family law. 6:30pm, Belk Pavilion 208.
Oct 2: Jonathan D. Katz, "Queer before Stonewall: Art, Eros and The Sixties." Come to Yeager Recital Hall at 6pm to meet an art world rockstar! Katz is co-curator of Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture, the first queer exhibition ever mounted at a major US museum. He was founding director of Yale's Lesbian and Gay Studies Program, the first in the Ivy League. A pioneering scholar, in 1990, he was the first full-time American academic to be tenured in the field of gay and lesbian studies and founded and chaired both the Harvey Milk Institute, the largest queer studies institute in the world, and the Queer Caucus for Art of the College Art Association. He also co-founded Queer Nation, San Francisco, and the Gay and Lesbian Town Meeting, the organization that successfully lobbied for queer anti-discrimination statutes in the city of Chicago. He is the president and chief curator of the new Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York City.
Oct 11: National Coming Out Day. Come to Spectrum's "Coming Out All Over" event at 6:00pm in Oaks 212. There will be a panel of students and facstaff telling their coming out stories. In the meantime contemplate how important it is to be supportive of people who are coming out and share your stories of coming out to those around you as something (anything) that they might not like for you to be.

Friday, 7pm sharp: Resource Room Ribbon Cutting and Alumni Network Awards Ceremony. Help us recognize the great work alumni and others have done in supporting and improving the lives of LGBTQIA people both at Elon and in other communities.
Saturday, 12:30-2:30: Tailgate with fellow alums or new friends.
Oct 22: It Gets Better! 7pm & 9pm, Yeager Recital Hall. The amazing Alpha Psi Omega students plus other Elon students who sing, dance, act, or speak will bring us another amazing It Gets Better Night with fundraising for the Project and an atmosphere of joyful musicality that makes an episode of Glee look boring. Oct 26: International Intersex Awareness Day Film Screening, 5pm to 7pm, McEwen 011. "Intersex refers to a series of medical conditions in which a child's genetic sex (chromosomes) and phenotypic sex (genital appearance) do not match, or are somehow different from the "standard" male or female. About one in 2,000 babies are born visibly intersexed, while some others are detected later." (http://www.intersex-awareness-day.org/).
Nov 6: F to eMbody, 7:30pm, McKinnon. Who isn't excited to see the biggest names in transgender hip hop and multimedia performance? Katastrophe and Athens Boys Choir wake and shake you up (and educate you!).

Jan 14: "Elon Cares" benefit concert for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, performed by students in Elon's Performing Arts Department. Two shows, 6:30 and 8:30, in Yeager Recital Hall. Admission is free but donations are welcome and a silent auction and raffle will take place. Sponsored by the Performing Arts Department.
Jan 15: Beloved Community Peace Journey & Candlelight Vigil in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Join the Elon community, including co-sponsors Spectrum, in a Peace Journey that will meet at Boney Fountain at 4pm, or just meet us in the Academic Pavillion ampitheater in front of Lindner Hall at 4:45pm for the Candlelight Vigil, co-sponsored and co-led by the LGBTQ Office. Organized by the Multicultural Center, these events have many co-sponsors so we won't list them all here. Come out and feel the shared sense of purpose!
Feb 15: Elon will take part in "Race to the Ballot", a state-wide campaign led by The Coalition to Protect NC Families to defeat the proposed anti-LGBTQI Amendment to the NC state constitution that will be voted on in the May 8 primary. McKinnon Hall, 7-9pm. A capella groups will compete, voter registration forms will be handed out, people who have run to raise money will rest their feet, education will occur. Voter registration will also happen at this week's college coffee.
Feb 17: "Gathering of LGBT Community and Friends." Join folks from around Alamance County at Replacements LTD (1089 Knox Rd., McLeansville) at 6:30pm for dinner, musical entertainment, and discussion of community efforts to defeat "Amendment One". Email phardy32262@aol.com for more information.
Feb 23: "Intersections: A Conversation About Race, Sexuality, and Religion with Dr. Roger A. Sneed." Sneed, from Furman University, recently published the book Representations of Homosexuality: Black Liberation Theology and Cultural Criticism (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010). 4:30-5:30pm, Belk Library room 206.
Feb 24: Dr. Marvin Ellison will speak from 9:25-10:35am on strategies the interfaith movement has used to fight for marriage equality in Maine. This keynote is part of a day-long symposium, "Sex, Religion, and the Public Square: Religious Discourse in Debates about Same-Sex Marriage" sponsored by the Elon Center for the Study of Religion.

Apr 5: Vote Against Photo Project! Come to McKinnon E&F in Moseley between 10am and 4pm to have your picture taken showing your commitment to vote against Amendment One. T-shirts to wear for the shoot will be provided, and a donation lets you take one home. Free and open to the public.
Apr 12: Non-Violence Studies is sponsoring a talk by Anna Kirey on "LGBT rights in Eastern Europe and post-Soviet Union: Activism, State Response and International Organizations." 4:15-5:30, Gray Pavilion 201.
Apr 12: The Liberal Arts Forum hosts trans legend Kate Bornstein in Whitley Auditorium at 7:30pm. Bornstein is the author of several books, including the groundbreaking Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us (Vintage, 1995) and currently blogs on alternatives to suicide for "teens, freaks, and other outlaws".
Apr 15: Religious Studies, the Truitt Center, and the LGBTQ Office are co-hosting a screening of the documentary "Love Free or Die" about the consecration of gay and lesbian bishops in the Episcopal church--discussion with the filmmaker to follow the screening. McEwen 011, 6pm.

Apr 18: Public Gathering on the Implications of NC Amendment One, sponsored by the Elon Community Church UCC. Presentations on the legal and religious implications of the issue from Jimmy Creech, Elon Law Profs Michael Rich and Sonya Garza, and Religious Studies Prof Lynn Huber. 7pm in the Sanctuary of the Elon Community Church.

May 8: NC state primary voting. Get out and vote against the anti-LGBTQI amendment!
May 9: Vote Against Post-Mortem, Moseley 215, 5pm. Gather with our broadest community to process the May 8th outcome. Food, music, and wisdom from community leaders provided.
May 13: Lavender Graduation, 4 to 6pm. Graduating students (from any program or school) will be celebrated and receive rainbow tassels to wear at graduation. Contact us if you want to be involved!

Students will enact a variety of performances in two shows, one at 7pm and another at 8:30pm, to raise money for the It Gets Better Project. Admission is free, but come on! $1 to stop the bullying and hate? Easy choice.
