Why did you choose Elon's Gap Experience?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of doing a gap year, in between high school and college, to experience the world.  My parents, however, kindly told me that there was no way I would be doing a gap year and “exploring the world” if they were paying for it.  The Gap Experience gives me the ability to have a gap semester while satisfying my parents.  As a college student I get to experience life in other parts of the United States and outside of the country which is something that I have always wanted to do.

What about the Gap Experience excites you the most?

I love that through the Gap Experience, I will be able to learn and experience cultures other than my own.  The U.S.A. is a huge country and each part of the country is unique in its culture and climate.  I love learning and experiencing new cultures because I believe that it makes me a better and more well-rounded person.

The Gap Experience includes three of the things I’m most passionate about: outdoors, service, and travel.  Also, I wanted to start off my first year of doing something extraordinary, where I could make a difference while having time for self discovery.

What about the Gap Experience excites you the most?

I’ve been hiking/backpacking for over seven years, but have never been gone for more than 2 weeks.  I’m looking forward to the 23 day NOLS program.  I’m also excited about traveling to Alicante, Espana to be able to test out the Spanish I’ve learned, hike the Camino de Santiago, eat paella/ tortilla de Espanola, and spend time with my host family.  I can’t wait to create so many memories with the other 14 gap students.

Why did you choose Elon's Gap Experience?

I wanted to challenge myself and discover more about myself while helping to effect the world around me in a positive way. I wanted to experience more of life before I had to return to a classroom. Everything that has shaped me as a person seems to have led me to this moment.

Why did you choose Elon's Gap Experience?

I chose the Elon Gap Experience because I wanted to get out of my comfort zone.  Backpacking and camping in the wilderness for an extended period of time is something that is completely foreign to me, and it provides for a unique challenge alongside a learning experience that I may not have been able to participate in otherwise.

What about the Gap Experience excites you the most?

I am most excited about traveling to Spain.  As someone who has been to Europe once before, the thought of participating in the lifestyle of another culture once again with the added bonus of learning and improving on another language just seems like no other experience.
