Mindfulness and Buddhism:

The Mindful Elon project is an interdisciplinary collaboration of multiple departments, programs, and student groups that offer activities and events to promote more mindful well-being within the Elon campus community. You can sign up for the Mindful Elon newsletter here to learn about Mindful opportunities on campus.

This modern Mindfulness movement is deeply influenced by Buddhist principles and practices. The story of this influence is well covered by Jeff Wilson's book Mindful America(2014). Mindfulness has been made popular in the United States by the clinical work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, the writings of Thich Nhat Hanh and the Dalai Lama, and popular meditation teachers such as Joseph Goldstein, Jack Kornfield, and Sharon Salzberg, who together founded the Insight Meditation Society.

Kabat-Zinn developed Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction as an evidence-based program to help patients with pain management, anxiety, and trauma recovery. His work translated Buddhist practices into a secular and clinical setting, where many patients are completely unaware of these Buddhist roots, and thus helped to popularize and scientifically legitimize mindfulness and meditation beyond Buddhism for the wider American culture.
