Off Campus Request Information

Moving off-campus is a privilege for students who have demonstrated responsibility as an on-campus resident and our application and appeal process reflect this attitude. (application available here).

Decisions will be made based on your letter, academic and judicial records, and current and projected campus occupancy numbers. We are only able to release a limited number of students each year. Submitting an off-campus application is not a guarantee that you will receive permission and students are advised not to sign a lease until they have received notice that their request has been approved.

Elon University has a two-year residency requirement based on evidence that students who live on campus are more engaged in the community, perform better academically, and are more likely to utilize campus resources. If students wish to live off-campus before their junior year, they must apply to be granted off campus status and thus be released from the residency requirement.

• Students will be required to submit an unofficial transcript (available on OnTrack) along with their application and letter. While there will be no official GPA standard, this will give the committee a more complete understanding of the student’s progress and needs.

• A judicial check will be performed as part of the applicant review process. Applicants will be given the opportunity to elaborate on any past probationary status in writing on the application. Students who are currently on probation or have incomplete sanctions will not be given permission to move off-campus.

• We will not be requesting medical documentation. However, you are welcome to include any paperwork that may support your letter.

• Students must acknowledge that they have informed their parent(s), guardian(s), or person(s) responsible for their housing bills that they plan to apply for off-campus status.

Off-Campus Application Steps

1. Complete the application available here or in the main residence life office (Moseley 213). Attach a copy of your transcript from OnTrack and a letter specifying specific reasons for cancelling your housing agreement. Discuss why your needs would be better met off-campus and what steps you have taken to resolve the situation (e.g., talking with a student staff member, assistant director, etc.)

2. Submit all three documents to the off-campus committee c/o MarQuita Barker, Associate Director of Residence Life Operations and Information Management, 2980 Campus Box, Moseley Center 213. Applications must be received by noon on the due date.

3. The student’s submitted letter, academic and judicial records, and any additional documentation will be reviewed by the off-campus committee. The committee will meet and make a recommendation to the associate director of residence life operations and information management regarding your appeal. The committee will evaluate whether your needs can be met on campus and if all possible ways to alleviate said problem(s) have been pursued.

Often times, residence life will try to find you an on-campus alternative. Off-campus applications are not guaranteed and therefore you should not sign an off-campus lease until you receive official notification on whether or not your request has been granted. Please note that applications are decided on an individual basis. Members of groups are taken into consideration but all are not guaranteed.
