Listed below are primary responsibilities for LC
advisors. These guidelines should help you navigate the
ambiguities of being an advisor to a Learning Community.
1. Consider unique methods for connecting
residents with the discipline, curriculum, department,
learning outcomes, etc.

Serve as primary connector between Learning Community &
curriculum/major/department

Create LC “syllabus” (or goals/plan) and
learning objectives
2. Help develop events and projects that
enhance community, encourage collaborative learning and
connect in-class learning with out-of-class
experiences.

Meet with RAs, ADs to ensure at least 3 connected events
occur each semester

Communicate with Residence Life student/professional staff
about concerns, planing, etc.

Communicate with and recruit support departmental faculty
3. Participate in the life and events of the
Learning Community

Plan to Interact with residents at least once per
month
-
Get to know students in the community
-
Attend opening floor meeting and possibly other community
meetings

Attend 3 events per semester

Recruit residents to be involved in your department
4. Fulfill administrative
responsibilities
o Workshop during boot camp & monthly LC Lunches
o Planning Meetings with AD, RA and LC
o Meetings with LC
o Open Houses for Selection
o Promote LC to students during selection (College
Coffee & Admissions events)
o Work with residents, faculty and department to
publicize LC to students
o Select residents (returning in February, incoming in
May/June)
Serve two years and assist to find a replacement within your
department
