LINCS
Leaders INCollaborative Service (LINCS) The past five years have shown a dramatic increase that led to doubling the number of Academic Service-Learning courses that the Kernodle Center for Service Learning has managed. It has been the sole responsibility of community organizations to manage student volunteers through curricular and co-curricular service. From this need, a request to fund student liaisons emerged and funding through the Frueauff Foundation was granted for this purpose. The 2005-2006 allocation led to the piloting of the first Leaders In Collaborative Service (LINCS) partnerships. Three sites were selected using a Two Tier model and in 2006, three additional sites were added. In the Spring of 2008, one additional organization was secured and there are plans to add another site in the fall of 2008, making 8 partnering organizations. Collaboration and Training LINCS students act as liaisons for seven community non-profits where many Elon University students perform service. Each has an organization email for correspondence and receives a small stipend allocated from grant funds to support the LINCS student. After strong consideration is given to balancing partnerships, selected student leaders and community partners participate in a volunteer management and goal setting training prior to beginning the program. Reports to our student Director of LINCS, through EV! and monthly LINCS meetings are held at the center and supported by the Assistant Director for Community Partnerships. Through these conversations, site issues become an integral part of the reflective and collective learning for LINCS coordinators. The LINCS are able to support each other and gain valuable knowledge about the circumstances surrounding Elon student management, as well as what this responsibility means to community organizations and the impact of service. In return for their service, LINCS gain hands-on experience working in a community agency setting, participate in monthly reflection and training sessions, receive a semester stipend of $600.00, and develop skills in the following areas: volunteer management, reflection facilitation, diversity training, leadership and other identified areas of interest. Each year, we partner with around 100 local community agencies including nonprofits, schools and government offices. Resources and Support are provided by the Kernodle Center to sustain and strengthen a variety of levels and types of partnership with the community. While some agencies may partner for one semester with one course or for one volunteer event, others may collaborate with multiple courses and sustained service activities each semester. We have LINCS at the following agencies: Allied Churches Allied Churches is meeting the basic needs of the lonely, hungry and homeless, while challenging and empowering them to be self-sufficient. Volunteers are expected to help children in academic areas, with homework and school projects while also developing healthy relationships with the children through other activities offered at PAYC.
