Alternative Breaks Program

Community Education (Asheville, NC)

Overview

This Fall Break program immerses participants in Asheville, North Carolina, to learn about community development and education while working at Art Space Charter School, a public charter school for grades K-8 that features an arts-integrated curriculum.

Participants can expect to do a variety of service while at Art Space, including manual work outside in the playground/garden area as well as directly assisting teachers in the classroom and interacting with the students.

In addition to the service, participants will have the opportunity to explore Asheville by spending some time downtown and doing outdoor activities such as hiking at Catawba Falls or Lookout Mountain for spectacular views of the Asheville area.

Participants will be challenged to rethink their definitions of social issues and explore new ways to engage in service, while seeing the impact of their work on the Art Space community.  The unique opportunities Art Space provides for children are truly invaluable, and participants will feel welcomed into this caring community and work to help them continue to strive to offer the best educational experience for their students.  Upon return to campus, we hope that these experiences will continue to impact participants.
