rift in the space-time continuum

eweek is reporting that Microsoft's Third Open Software Project, FlexWiki, has been released today. What is the world coming to? Microsoft? Open source? Wiki? My mouth is hanging open, and I'm checking the Bible for other signs of the End Times being near. Hey, where are we going and what is this handbasket we're riding in?

Second Life: Game World for GST 364

Wired News: Campus Life Comes to Second Life

Delwiche and professors like the University of Texas at Austin's Anne Beamish have for months been working on developing classes inside Second Life with Robin Harper, senior vice president at Linden Lab, the metaverse's publisher. Now the company, in an attempt to attract more professors wanting to experiment with this ultra-unorthodox teaching method, has formalized an outreach program to universities called Campus: Second Life.

The Changing Face Of Campus Tech

Slashdot has an exchange on The Changing Face Of Campus Tech. Discussion begins thusly:

"CNET News has an interesting perspective on the changing face of technology on campus. These days, students are showing more interest in the tech perks that campuses have to offer, and universities are taking notice. Duke University, for example, just gave away free iPods to each of their 1,650 incoming freshman. Penn State offers subsidized access to Napster 2.0 for all students, and many other schools are now considering similar programs with Rhapsody and Cdigix. Perhaps the best offering is wireless internet access, which 90% of campuses now offer in some form. Are we seeing the day when college students make their school of choice not based solely on academics or athletics, but also on tech freebies like these?"
