wikipedia is not evil
The New York Times gives reasons why Wikipedia did a fantastic job reporting the news of the Virginia Tech shootings last week. From the Times:
Wikipedia is not evil. It's just new and different, and that makes people afraid. I want to yell this from the mountaintops: Stop being afraid to use Wikipedia, and start embracing it for what it is! It is a collaboratively edited clearinghouse for information on a variety of current and historical events, people, places, and things.
Disclaimer: I am a proud editor of many dozen Wikipedia articles. I also remove wikipedia spam when I see it, and I have my own wikis for personal and professional use.
From the contributions of 2,074 editors, at last count, the site created a polished, detailed article on the massacre, with more than 140 separate footnotes, as well as sidebars that profiled the shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, and gave a timeline of the attacks.
