Phoenix offensive coordinator leaves

by Michelle Longo,
Warren Ruggiero, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the Phoenix since December 2005 resigned his position Thursday, after accepting a similar position at Kansas State University.

In 2006, Elon's quarterback Wes Pope established a new school record by throwing for 2,572 yards under the guidance of Ruggiero.

Ruggiero will be entering his 21st year as a college football coach. An offensive coordinator at five colleges, Ruggiero’s offenses have finished among the country’s top 10 teams four times. His quarterbacks have also enjoyed much success, with four out of five elevating to All-American status. They have broken four NCAA all-time records and have placed in the top 10 of eight NCAA statistical categories.

In an e-mail sent to the Elon community, Ruggiero said he had to make the move to Kansas State.

"Although I did not actively seek this position, I could not pass up the opportunity to fulfill a life-long career goal to coach for a BCS school," Ruggiero said. "My time at Elon has been incredibly rewarding and fulfilling."
