ABSS 21st Century

Description: The 21st Century Community Learning Center is an afterschool tutoring program that serves 280 high-risk students (and their families) in six Title I Elementary Schools. We offer a snack to the children at the end of their regular school day and we provide transportation home when the program ends each day. We provide academic tutoring in reading, writing, math, and science. We have a STEM focus in which we use inquiry-based, hands-on science kits and Lego Education materials, along with a wide array of other high-interest materials. We offer assistance with homework, as well as include recreational and enrichment programs to the students. Some of our partners that offer recreation/enrichment activities are: Burlington Police Dept., Alamance Arts Council, Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, and Elon University.

The year-round schools begin tutoring in August and the traditional calendar schools begin tutoring in September. All schools end their tutoring program in May.

Notes: The 21st Century Community Learning Center strives to build and sustain partnerships with community agencies. We would like to develop an arts/music program as well as a science/technology/engineering/mathematics program.
