Osborn, who is originally from Durham, N.C., teaches history courses at the Durham County Public School District’s Southern High School of Energy and Sustainability.

“Elon has given me the tools, both pedagogically and technologically, to be successful,” Osborn said. “Many of the teaching and management tactics that I learned in my upper-level education classes I use on a regular basis. I use many of the technological tools introduced to us too. Technology can be a major time-saver and has helped me be more efficient as an educator.”

Osborn has already included a variety of innovative activities in her classes. She had WWII Holocaust survivors visit her class, and every Friday introduces her students to controversial, newsworthy and complex topics that they may not have encountered in their day-to-day life.

“We just read and discussed an article related to the movie Selma titled, ‘I bet you have no idea what Martin Luther King REALLY did for the South,'” Osborn said. “They get so into these discussions. It’s wonderful to see them so engaged.”
