Four Elon faculty members were instrumental in “Looking and Learning: Visual Literacy Across the Disciplines,” the latest issue of New Directions for Teaching and Learning, a Jossey-Bass journal focused on issues of higher education pedagogy.

Peter Felten and Deandra Little, along with Chad Berry of Berea College, co-edited the Spring 2015 issue of the series. Professors Tony Crider and Phillip Motley, as well as Little, contributed articles to the collection.

Crider’s article, “Teaching Visual Literacy in the Astronomy Classroom,” describes how he teaches students to read and create complex visuals in astronomy. Motley’s article, “Learning—to and from—the Visual Critique Process,” focuses on critique as a signature pedagogy in courses where the creation of visual content is a primary objective. Little’s article, “Teaching Visual Literacy Across the Curriculum: Suggestions and Strategies,” highlights a handful of strategies that faculty can use to implement visual literacy approaches to their teaching.
