The 22nd annual event honored students for academic achievement and excellence in the Elon experiences.
Outstanding black Elon students were honored April 25 at a banquet and awards ceremony celebrating academic achievement. The Phillips-Perry Black Excellence Awards is an annual event organized by the Center for Race, Ethnicity and Diversity Education (CREDE) that aims to challenge and inspire black students to achieve excellence in their studies.
Four students were honored for having the highest grade point averages in their respective classes. They were senior Krystal Lanclos, junior Emily Roper, sophomore Alexis Williams and freshman Sean Webber.
Five students were recognized for excellence in the Elon Experiences:

Zora Stephenson was honored as the female athlete of the year and Miles Williams was recognized as the male athlete of the year. Students with cumulative grade point averages of 3.5 to 3.79 were honored with Gold Club awards, and students with cumulative GPAs of 3.2 to 3.49 received Maroon Club awards. The awards ceremony included a welcome from Brooke Barnett, associate provost for inclusive community, and remarks by President Leo M. Lambert. The Elon University Gospel Choir performed a musical selection, and senior Krystal Lanclos delivered a charge to students.
The evening began with a banquet featuring remarks by Gail Fonville Parker ’70, Elon’s first female African-American graduate, who described her challenging experiences as a groundbreaking black student on campus. Also at the banquet, Assistant Professor of Education Cherrel Miller-Dyce was honored by the Black Student Union with the Black Faculty Member Award, and Michael Williams, director of campus center operations and conferences, was given the Black Staff Member Award.
