An Elon University alumnus currently working in New York City will spend a year in Malaysia starting in January with support from a 2015-2016 Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship.

Jason Waterman ’14, who majored in communication science with research interests in behavioral economics, currently works for 360i in New York City as a digital analyst.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright was established in 1946 by Congress to “enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.”

“It’s truly an honor to be chosen to represent the United States in Malaysia as a Fulbright recipient,” Waterman said. “I’m excited for the opportunity, not only as a way to continue to stretch my own comfort zone and understanding, but also as a way to build meaningful, productive relationships with the community in my role as both a cultural ambassador and educator.”

At Elon, the native of Bloomington, Indiana, was a member of the Elon Men’s Soccer team, scoring the winning penalty kick in a November 2013 overtime playoff game shootout that advanced the Phoenix further into the NCAA tournament than ever before.

In addition to athletic accolades – he was named an NSCAA Academic All American and Academic All-Conference in the Southern Conference – Waterman was active with the Elon African Society, the Intellectual Climate Advisory Committee, the American Advertising Federation, the Intersect: Diversity and Leadership Conference, the NC Literacy Corps and the Elon Executive Intern program.

He received several academic awards and honors as well: President’s List, 2014 Most Outstanding Communication Science Student, membership in the Lamda Pi Eta and Psi Chi honor societies, Mahaffey Scholarship for International Service, Robert C. Browne Memorial Sportsmanship Award and the USA Weekend Make A Difference Award.

Since its establishment under legislation introduced by the late U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has given approximately 300,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, and scientists the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

Waterman is the son of David Waterman and Sharon Mayell, both of Bloomington, Indiana.
