Elon University School of Communications assistant professors Youssef Osman and Nicole Triche participated in the University Film & Video Association’s annual conference, leading several panels and workshops for professors and filmmakers in attendance. This year’s conference was held Aug. 4-8 at American University in Washington, D.C.

Osman served on the jury for the conference’s fiction film category. He also screened his nine-minute film “Just Human,” a short experimental fictional film. The project explores the rationale behind legitimacy of killing in an absurd surreal world. Additionally, Osman presented a paper titled “Youssef Chahine’s Egypt: Film, Politics and Controversy” in a four-person panel discussion titled “Screen Visions: Commodification, Controversy, and Identification.”

Director of the elondocs production program, Triche served as a moderator for a panel titled “Beyond the Classroom: Documentaries and Engagement” and presented “Developing Undergraduate Documentaries Outside the Classroom: A Case Study of the elondocs Production Program.” Teamed with Wake Forest University’s Cara Pilson and Cynthia Hill, Triche also oversaw a “Pitching Short Documentaries” workshop.

The University Film and Video Association is an organization of professors, scholars, and film and video makers. The organization is based in the United States, but has members throughout the world. This year’s conference theme was “Media With Impact: Engaging, Enterprising & Experiential.”
