Elon named to President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

Elon earns national recognition in all four categories of community engagement.

Elon University earns recognition in the 2015 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The honors were announced Sept. 23 at the President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge Gathering this weekend at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.

The Honor Roll recognizes institutions of higher education that support exemplary community service programs and raise the visibility of effective practices in campus community partnerships. Elon has been recognized as a leader in community service annually since the award was created in 2006. The recognition is administered by the Corporation for National & Community Service in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education, Campus Compact and the Interfaith Youth Core.

Elon was named to the President’s Honor Roll in all four categories of community engagement, with recognition for excellence in General Community Service and Economic Opportunity, and with special distinction in Education and Interfaith Community Service.

Last year, Elon students contributed more than 119,000 hours of service, coordinated through the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement. Fifty academic courses were linked to service work last year, and 92 percent of the Class of 2016 participated in service during their Elon education.
