Music Theatre alumni celebrate opening nights on Broadway, in National Tours

The Broadway shows “Hello, Dolly!” and “Anastasia,” as well as the National Tour of “Aladdin” officially opened this week and featureng Elon Music Theatre alumni.

These are busy times for the Broadway community, with a series of successful openings from revivals to new musicals.

The Broadway revival of “Hello, Dolly!” starring Bette Midler officially opened on Thursday, April 20, at the Shubert Theatre. Among the principle characters is music theatre alum Taylor Trensch, who plays the character of Barnaby Tucker. Trensch is no stranger to the Broadway stage, having recently played the roles of Christopher in the Tony Award winning play “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” Michael Wormwood in the Broadway musical “Matilda,” and Boq in the long-running “Wicked.”

On Monday, April 24, the long-anticipated Broadway musical “Anastasia” officially opened at the Broadhurst Theatre, with music theatre alum Johnny Stellard ‘10 in the ensemble and as the dance captain for the production. Stellard is also no stranger to the Broadway stage, having performed in the acclaimed revival of “Evita.”

On Wednesday, April 19, alum Michael Callahan ’13 opened in the 1 Broadway National Tour of “Aladdin,” which is currently at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre. Callahan is a Swing and the dance captain for the production. Since graduation, Callahan has found much success in the performing arts, from making his Broadway debut in “Cinderella,” to going on the road with the National Tour of “Cinderella,” and also making his choreographic debut for the Off-Broadway production of “Fiorello!”

On Broadway right now, you can also currently see alum Gerald Caesar ’16 in “A Bronx Tale” at the Longacre Theatre, Nasia Thomas ’15 and Rob Marnell ’06 in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, Tanner Wilson ’13 in “CATS” at the Neil Simon Theatre, Kennedy Caughell ’12 and Ashley Perez Flanagan ‘10 in “The Great Comet” at the Imperial Theatre, Paul Heesang Miller ’10 in “Miss Saigon” at the Broadway Theatre, Mackenzie Bell ’09 in “Sunset Boulevard” at the Palace Theatre, Todd Horman in “The Phantom of the Opera” at the Majestic Theatre, and Lindsay Northen ’03 in “Wicked” at the Gershwin Theatre.

On the National Tour circuit, you can currently see Ginna Claire Mason ’13 as Glinda in “Wicked,” Lizzie Markson ’16 as Sophie in “Mamma Mia,” Caity Skalski ’16 and Emilie Renier ’12 in “Cinderella,” Leah Greene ’15 in the International Asia tour of “Sister Act,” Mara Lucas ’15 and Savannah Sprinkle ’15 as Catherine in “Pippin,” Phylicia Pearl ’15 in “The Lion King,” Zane Phillips ’15 in “The Sound of Music,” Sumi Yu ’15 as Hannah in the premiere regional tour of “Freaky Friday,” and Chelsea Clark ’09 in “Cabaret.”
