Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education Conference 2017 featured work from CEL’s 2011-2013 Critical Transitions: Writing and the Question of Transfer research seminar.
At the 2017 POD Network conference, Center for Engaged Learning Director Jessie Moore, facilitated “Writing Across Contexts: Current Research and Implications for Educational Development,” a session featuring work from "Understanding Writing Transfer: Implications for Transformative Student Learning in Higher Education." The collection grew out of the Center’s 2011-13 research seminar, Critical Transitions: Writing and the Question of Transfer.
During the Oct. 26 session, Moore presented five essential principles about writing transfer, featured in Chapter 1 of the book. Kara Taczak, teaching assistant professor at the University of Denver, presented on characteristics of first-year writing curricula that support writing transfer (Chapter 9). Rebecca Frost Davis, director for instructional and emerging technology at St. Edward’s University, presented on digital ecosystems for learning that create opportunities for students to practice writing transfer (Chapter 3).
Stylus Publishing also hosted a book signing for "Understanding Writing Transfer" at the conference, which took place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Each year, CEL hosts seminars that support multi-institutional research on focused engaged learning topics. The seminars invite applications from scholars at higher education institutions around the world for 24 to 40 participant spots, and accepted participants collaborate over two academic years, with three summer meetings. The 2018-20 research seminar topic on Capstone Experiences is currently accepting applications, which are due on Nov. 13.
