Elon Alumni Board signs agreement to endow new student scholarship

The board was joined by President Connie Ledoux Book as they made the scholarship official at their annual spring meeting.

The Elon Alumni Board has endowed a new $100,000 scholarship that will help additional deserving students realize their dreams of obtaining an Elon education.

The generous gift was finalized at the board’s annual spring meeting on campus Saturday, April 7, when members met with President Connie Ledoux Book to sign an official scholarship agreement.

The scholarship will support first-year students with family members who previously attended Elon. As an Elon Engagement Scholarship, it will provide recipients with annual scholarship assistance as well as a one-time grant toward an approved Elon Experience in study abroad, undergraduate research, service learning, internships or leadership. Scholarship recipients will also be invited to interact and network with Elon Alumni Board members throughout their time at the university.

The board initially pledged to create the scholarship in conjunction with Elon Day 2018, committing to endow the scholarship if donors reached the first giving challenge of the day (1,250 gifts by 9:30 a.m.).

“By endowing the Elon Alumni Board Elon Engagement Scholarship, the board is creating a lasting legacy that will impact lives and strengthen Elon,” says Brian Feeley ’03, the university’s director of alumni engagement. “As a fellow alum, I’m proud and inspired by the generosity and leadership demonstrated by the members of the Elon Alumni Board.”

The Elon Alumni Board plays a vital role at the university by providing advice, counsel and perspective to university staff and leadership on a wide range of strategic issues.

During their campus meeting, members of the board engaged with President Book and senior staff members Jon Dooley, vice president for student life, and Jim Piatt, vice president for university advancement, among others. They also toured Schar Center, a 5,100-seat, 160,000-square-foot facility currently under construction and slated to open in fall 2018.
