Master of Education program welcomes new summer cohort

On Monday, June 18, the Master of Education Program welcomed a new cohort of 11 students to the Elon University campus to begin a three-year course of study.

Members of the new cohort represent four North Carolina school districts, one out-of-state school district, two Latin American countries and one Asian country.

Students currently teach in Guilford, Forsyth, Wake and Person counties in North Carolina and Fairfield County in Connecticut. They bring with them a wealth of diverse experiences and backgrounds.  They teach in elementary schools, charter schools, middle schools, and high schools.

Some have taught for as little as two years and others as many as 22 years. The international students are teaching in the United States for three years as part of the Participate Program (formerly known as VIF), and they will each share teaching experiences from their native countries.

The M.Ed. summer cohort program is a concentrated three-year program leading to the Master of Education degree. The program involves two sessions each summer for three years and one online course each fall and spring semester between.

This configuration works well for teachers who can take most of their graduate courses during the summer when they are not teaching. It also works well for Participate Program teachers who can complete their graduate studies during the three years they are teaching in the United States.

Among the new cohort of students, eight are studying gifted education and three are studying elementary education. They will complete the program in July 2020.
