Elon kicks off summer with a Brass Band concert

The campus community was joined by local residents for an old-fashioned outdoor band concert under the oak trees at the Martin Alumni Center.

The Elon community got in the summer spirit on June 21 with a concert and picnic featuring the North Carolina Brass Band. The concert was sponsored by Elon’s Office of the President and gave staff and faculty a chance to get together and enjoy some relaxation and fellowship.

Joining Elon employees were local residents, who were invited to the free concert, along with students enrolled in the summer sessions of the Elon Academy.

An Uncle Sam on stilts strolled through the crowd, while people lined up for bowls of Smitty’s Ice Cream, hot dogs and popcorn. The Brass Band performed a mix of patriotic tunes and standard Broadway show tunes.

President Connie Ledoux Book welcomed the crowd of more than 500 and said the concert was a great way to enjoy the season and get ready for the upcoming Independence Day holiday.

Elon resident Dave Turnage thanked the university for sponsoring the concert. “It’s just been a delight to be here on this beautiful campus under the oaks and have the community come together and celebrate the beginning of summer,” Turnage said.
