On Oct. 9-10, 2018, two Elon Teaching Fellows and Scott Morrison, assistant professor of education, attended and shared their research at the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) conference in Spokane, Washington.

Scott Morrison, assistant professor of education, served on the keynote panel, “Stories from Research,” and shared his aspirational view on research design, methods, models, dilemmas, and influences on practical applications. In addition, he shared his research poster titled, “What Are We Doing Inside? Teacher Education in the Woods.” His poster is about using a forest school model to teach environmental education to undergraduates.

Nathan Hunnicutt, Elon Teaching Fellow and middle grades mathematics major, presented his research poster titled, “Toward Interconnected Sustainability Education: A Case Study of North Carolina Green Schools” during the poster session of the NAAEE conference in Spokane, Washington. The data for his research, conducted with Scott Morrison, in this qualitative case study was collected at three North Carolina Green Schools of Excellence (K-5 public, K-8 charter, and K-8 independent). Based on the metric of interconnectedness (Warner & Elsar, 2015), they investigated whether and/or how these schools take a whole-school approach to sustainability education.

Mirella Cisneros, Elon Teaching Fellow and middle grades mathematics major, presented her research poster titled, “Numbers are Everywhere: Examining the Effects of Teaching Math Outside.” In her qualitative case study with Scott Morrison, they examined the effects of teaching math outside with a class ofseventh-gradee students and their teacher at a rural middle school in North Carolina, adding to the literature on place-based mathematics education.

For more than four decades, NAAEE has promoted excellence in environmental education throughout North America and the world. NAAEE is dedicated to strengthening the field of environmental education and increasing the visibility and efficacy of the profession.
