Day of the Dead altar in Carlton Commons

The altar will be open to the public until Friday, Nov. 2, at 1:30 pm.

Close to 200 Spanish students and 125 Elon Elementary students visited the annual Day of the Dead altar in Carlton Commons this week.

Students learned about the history of this important Mexican holiday, discussed the symbolism of objects placed on the altar, were given an opportunity to share about loved ones who have passed away and enjoyed delicious Day of the Dead bread from Panadería El Dorado in Burlington.

Faculty members April Post, Ricardo Mendoza and Tom Mould organized the event and students Yaliz Pedraza, Regina Mendoza and Edith Gallegos helped to decorate the altar. Yaliz also shared about her family’s traditions with Elon Elementary students.

The altar will be open to the public until Friday, Nov. 2.
